CAS Project 2016

It was definitely a struggle to think of ways to raise money for our CAS Project but somehow still convince people to come, but one of my classmates and fellow collaborators brilliantly came up with the idea of a ping pong tournament! His idea gave way to a wonderful afternoon, which turned into a whole day of snacking and playing bananagrams and ping pong, all for charity! We took optional donations at the door of the event and raised $69.69 exactly.

Facebook does wonders for organizing events. I couldn't think of anything better short of making your own website for an event! Thanks to my generous bosses at work, we were given access to the perfect venue, and for free! Several other people brought generous donations and copious snacks that guaranteed the event's success. I think we struck the perfect balance between organizing something in advance, and planning on the fly!

We never managed to get a photo with everyone who came, but here are some of the participants :)

The IB learner outcomes best exemplified were:
  • Consideration of ethical implications: Considering the way that specific charities use their donations is a really important part of donating money. Whether the organization is non-profit or not and the immediate and direct effect the money has are important things to take into account. Some charity work actually ends up being detrimental to local businesses and are the equivalent of a giant band aid, rather than the seeds for success.
  • Planned and initiated activities: Usually I am not the type to be the head of an event-planning team, but since there were only three of us doing this project, I was forced to take initiative and help make the event happen!
  • Engaged with issues of global importance: We donated our proceeds to The Global Mission at St. Jude's Children's Hospital, which shares information globally, trains health care staff around the world, and is involved with the global fight against influenza.
Total Project Time: 7 hours
